Make it a Dozen

Good things come by the dozen. What are you thinking? Go ahead, give it a minute.

Did you think donuts, roses, eggs, 12-packs, or something else?

Drop a note. I’d like to know where you went with that question.

Here’s what made me think of it: on Super Bowl Sunday this past February, I ran my 12th full marathon. That’s 26.2 miles of fun. Well, about 22 miles were fun, but some troubles hit the last few miles. I’d just finished reading “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins1, and his story helped me gut it out through the finish line of the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach.

That might have been a mistake. I spent some time in the medical tent afterwards. My left leg turned into a tree limb when dehydration triggered a full-leg cramp that wouldn’t release. I learned it’s a good idea to stop taking blood pressure medications a few days before participating in a severely dehydrating event.

Who knew? The things we I do for fun.

It was a good race. Finishing fourth (of 55) in my age division, I beat the Boston Marathon qualifying time by about nine minutes. So, Lord willing, I’ll be running my third “Boston” in 2021. According to the Runner’s World Age Grade Calculator, my 3:46 finish is equal to a sub-3 hour marathon time in the open division. I’m still not back into the “regional ranked” category but getting darned close.
