Exploitation of Older Adults and How to Report

The Curtailing Abuse Related to the Elderly (C.A.R.E.) Program is a branch of the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) Adult Services Division that addresses elder and dependent adult abuse through advocacy, education, training, and coordination of interagency collaboration. While the issues underlying abuse don’t change much over time, the tactics do change, so we are privileged to host C.A.R.E. Program Supervisor and Sr. Community Program Specialist Michaela Williams and Community Program Specialist II Shirley De Santiago to inform and increase awareness of the telltale signs of elder abuse and exploitation, and how to recognize, prevent, and report fraud and abuse.

We will present on the different types of abuse our elderly are exposed to with an emphasis on financial exploitation through Consumer Fraud, Scams, and ID Theft, to include how scammers have used COVID-19 and technology to their benefit. According to Michaela Williams, scammers move fast, placing urgency at the heart of their swindle. Attendees will also learn what you as a mandated reporter or community member can do to help protect our seniors by knowing how, where, and when to report.
