The 28 men in this story faced unimaginable hardship and privation. After the Endurance was crushed in pack ice, they survived an Antarctic winter with three small boats, camping on ice, scavenging whatever they could, and constantly improvising.

Shackleton’s leadership was a key to their survival. But so were a series of lucky choices, especially near the end of the tale.

World War One overshadowed this expedition, and once they began, there was no contact with them. There were no communications beyond face-to-face interactions at that time.

I also found this book to be a bit of a history lesson. I learned a lot about the geography of Antarctica and the early days of polar exploration. I also learned a lot about the sea leopards, blubber, and a whole host of other things.
