An uncommon career politician who strived to reduce both the public debt and taxes, who did it while building a reputation for both good fortune and efficient diction, lived in an America very different from our times.
There’s an upsurge in books about in our 30th President, this one might have started it. Coolidge was the last President to believe the executive’s role is primarily administrative. He Shunned debts, left country with a smaller budget than he inherited, and restored confidence in Washington DC after replacing a scandal-ridden administration upon Harding’s death.
The truths about him are more flattering than his reputation. Silent Cal was really an astute, forward looking, moderate conservative, worthy of our contemporary interest.
