Runnin Ralph’s primary was a sports doctor with great credentials; team physician for the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League and extensive work with a Tour D France champion. These guys know about athletics.

Ralph’s goals are more pedestrian, he just wants to get under three hours in the marathon. Well, maybe that’s not so pedestrian, but the point is he wants to be the best marathoner he can become.

So, the doctor told him to lose weight. Elite endurance athletes average about 2 pounds per inch of height, which works out to 146 for a 6’1” guy like Ralph.

He weighed 185.

How many size changes would that entail?

How does someone lose that much weight?

Runnin’ Ralph never got to elite skinny, settling on a 165 racing-weight. Nor did he accomplish the sub-3-hour marathon.

Age and others held higher priorities.

And that’s all ok.
