Christmas is my most treasured holiday, and this year I had the opportunity to help stage the inaugural production of an evangelical play written just for our church, titled “True Meanings.”

Cadence Counts
Last summer, during the first month of using the Garmin, my median cadence was exactly 170 SPM. My average run was 6.5 miles, and my average pace was 8:37.
More than a Fitbit – Go Garmin!
Running cadence is important. An optimal rate is about 180 steps per minute (SPM). With a slower cadence there’s a likelihood of overstriding, a common problem with novice runners often evidenced by severe heel striking.
A Race, at Last!
If you’ve been following my running updates, you know that I haven’t been running enough to feel very competitive. While my running volume still hasn’t been consistent enough to consider a marathon.

Not so ten years later, so I’ve decided that my running will be done mostly on weekdays, when my workday is mostly sedentary. So that gives me five consecutive days to ply the roads and trails each week.

During the year before we moved into the offices in Tower Office Plaza, I averaged 187 running miles per month. In the three years since moving, the monthly average dropped to 107.

Like most people concerned about their health, I try to get regular physical exams. This month I had my first in almost two years, and it was a long one as there’s a lot of things that just plain hurt.
Advice to new runners
If you want to start running, and have been completely sedentary for a long time, get a physical, and start by walking a bunch.
